Prologue Summary
Prologue Summary
The Crowfolk (Ujin / Karasubito)
The founders were Adhmar Huginn and his younger sister and wife, Eua Muninn.
Once, the twins were beautiful white crows.
However, after a certain incident, they were banished from the heavenly paradise. Their white feathers and beautiful voices were taken from them, and they wandered the world.
The two eventually strayed into Valhalla, where they came to serve the god Odin.
After a great war typical of mythic creation tales, the world was destroyed.
A massive flood followed, wiping out nearly all living beings.
Gods and humans alike never learn.
Originally lovers, Adhmar and Eua produced many descendants.
These descendants became the origin of the Five Tribes.
As time passed, they split into the Reiwu, Ougi, Zadou, Yukara, and Wenkam tribes.
Notably, Adhmar was still alive at this point.
Conflicts eventually arose among the Five Tribes, and the weary first king of Reiwu relinquished the throne to the Zadou tribe.
The Age of the Five Tribes
Time passed.
The five crow-demon tribes fought endlessly across mountainous regions and highlands.
During this era, Prince Corwû of the Reiwu tribe dreamed of uniting the Five Tribes while longing for the homeland of their ancestors.
His uncle Ronwé, half-mocking the idea, nevertheless chose to support the realization of that dream.
During this age, other nations referred to them as “Keleit,” “Crow Clan,” or “Crowfolk (Ujin).”
Notes
-
For racial traits, please refer to the race overview section.
-
The crowfolk are highly intelligent and capable of speaking many languages, often serving as diplomats.
-
Translating every language used in the story would be excessive, so this setting exists primarily as background lore.
The Five Tribes
Reiwu Tribe (Pureblood)
King: Gamijin Reiwu
Region: Highlands with a Mongolian-inspired culture
Language: Mongolian- and Chinese-like
Direct descendants of the progenitor, yet their culture stagnated in an earlier age, leaving them a weakened nation.
Their ancestor withdrew into seclusion after being betrayed by the Yukara and Wenkam tribes, who attempted to monopolize sacred gold.
The Zadou tribe, originally knights, were entrusted with the management of weapons and gold.
They frequently invaded the Chinese-inspired region and Ashihara.
Terrible traffic manners.
Strong emphasis on family bonds, including in-laws.
Quick to resort to violence, often leading to incidents requiring intervention.
They love hospitality.
Women tend to be career-driven, while many men are unemployed drifters.
Highly skilled in cavalry warfare, the tribe expanded its influence by sending spies into enemy territory under the cunning leadership of Ronwé, the youngest brother of Gamijin.
They formed an alliance with Karei, also known as the Chinese region, employing illusion techniques and Jiangshi (hopping corpse) units.
They seem fond of Ashihara culture, though it rarely appears directly in the story.
Religion: Shamanism and Tibetan Buddhism
Ougi Tribe (Pureblood)
King: Corbeau Shanyue
Aesthetic: Japanese, Chinese, and pan-Asian ethnic influences
Language: Japanese-, Indian (Sanskrit/Hindi)-, and Chinese-like
A tribe of giant-bodied people living in mountainous regions.
Though physically powerful and martial, many are gentle and pacifistic by nature.
Their land yields medicinal herbs and minerals.
The national flower is the Hiougi (Iris).
After a fierce war with their ally Reiwu, their gentle king surrendered for the sake of his people and became a vassal state.
Their massive bodies made them invaluable in construction, forming walls and large structures.
They are kind-hearted giants who love flowers, which explains their extensive cultivation of herbs and plants.
They are a phoenix-descended tribe and share blood ties with the Royal House of Ra of the Yukara.
Zadou Tribe (Pureblood)
Emperors:
Saint King Georgius → Empress Alexandra → Emperor Iskandar → Igor → Eugen Xanadu
The Zadou Empire rules over the snowfields and the golden imperial capital El Dorado.
To the south, at the border of the highlands and the Chinese-inspired regions, lies their summer capital, Xanadu.
Cultural influence: Germanic and Russian
Languages: German in the core regions, Russian in the north, Chinese-like dialects in the south
A highly advanced nation known for its disciplined military and stubborn adherence to order.
They value honor, structure, and fair combat, preferring open and legitimate warfare.
Imperial History
-
Saint King Georgius ruled with benevolence, especially favoring farmers. His lineage had been a military family for generations.
-
Empress Alexandra ruled through fear and military dominance, intimidating the northern snow nation of Rhosian, reclaiming the land of Xanadu, and liberating captured members of the royal family.
-
Emperor Igor, the third son, ascended the throne after the eldest brother Iskandar died of illness and the second brother Prince Eugene fell in battle.
Originally a free spirit, Igor abdicated early and served the empire as a senior statesman, supporting the throne from behind the scenes.
However, beginning with Emperor Eugen, the empire suffered from constant underground civil conflicts and succession struggles.
Frequent deaths of male heirs and battlefield casualties made imperial succession unstable.
Though the royal family was still large, public dissatisfaction grew under Eugen’s rule.
There is even suspicion that royal family members were deliberately sent to the front lines to thin their numbers.
Officially, this was justified by the need for royal leadership against invasions from the northern foreign nation of Rhosian.
Military and Relics
The empire possessed extremely high-powered weaponry, including an impregnable fortress housing the colossal superweapon known as “Indra’s Thunder.”
Later, this weapon came into the possession of Ground Ravain, but was ultimately destroyed by Ronwé to prevent misuse and mass casualties during the rebellion of the royal prince.
They once wielded the legendary magic sword Fragarach, which was surrendered to Prince Corwû upon their capitulation.
The Zadou fought valiantly until the end, but were ultimately forced to surrender.
Emperor Eugen and Empress Katinka committed ritual suicide.
Only Prince Zan and Prince Behemoth survived.
Imperial Capital: El Dorado
Located near the snow nation of Rhosian, El Dorado was known as the Golden Capital.
Its walls and palace were entirely gilded in gold.
Golden butterflies danced through its gardens, making the imperial palace dazzling and otherworldly.
Legend says that a kiss shared when the golden bell tolls binds two souls together forever.
This legend traces back to Empress Alexandra, the birth mother of Emperor Igor, and her consort Alexander.
The reason the royal family bears the surname Xanadu is that this land was once the original imperial capital.
Facing the Chinese-influenced regions, it was known as a Peach Blossom Utopia.
Wenkam Tribe (Heterogeneous Race)
Ruling House: House Ravenswan
Crown Prince: Foray Uvar Forfax
Region: Desert lands
Cultural tones:
-
Uwe’s region: British-inspired
-
Yuim’s region: Hawaiian blended with Japanese and Chinese aesthetics
Known as the City of Disease and Death, the region is marked by a towering Golden Clock Tower.
A multi-ethnic nation where the ruling House Ravenswan and their distant relatives, House Forfax, secretly vie for the throne.
Highly skilled in sorcery and shamanistic arts, many are intellectual strategists.
A devastating plague nearly wiped them out, making them a rare surviving people.
A remote village led by Morax Molech Forfax, a distant relative of the ancient royal bloodline, performed miracles through black magic.
Morax proclaimed himself the “General of Heavenly Light”, gathering fervent followers.
(Somewhere, Zhang Jiao is watching.)
True to the meaning of their name, “evil spirit, brat, or false god,” they allied with the Yukara king and betrayed the Reiwu king.
Based on their name’s origin, they are believed to be among the youngest gods.
Their land sits atop the entrance to the demonic realm Abyss, sealing miasma beneath it.
As a result, they were assigned barren, infertile territory.
Yukara Tribe (Heterogeneous Race)
Region: Desert lands
Cultural influence: Egyptian and Arabian
Languages: Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Ainu-like dialects depending on region
Originally exiled to the desert as traitors, the ancestors of the Yukara were banished alongside the progenitors of the Wenkam tribe to lands of disease and death.
The name Wenkam itself means “brat” or “demon.”
Their territory connects to the underworld Duat, once guarded by Osiris, Anubis, and Nephthys.
The royal house of Ra descends from Anubis.
A multi-ethnic, near-barbarian people, they excel at guerrilla warfare and ambush tactics.
They are a ferocious warrior culture with strong collective instincts.
Their ambitious ancestors repeatedly rebelled against the Reiwu tribe.
In pure martial prowess, they are unmatched, but their archaic methods cannot compete with Zadou weaponry.
They have no single permanent king.
Each clan is ruled by its own leader, and once every ten years, a grand martial tournament is held to determine the Yukara King.
Since mythic times, sibling and parent-child marriages have been customary, a practice other tribes cannot comprehend.
The Underworld and Language
The realm of the dead is Duat, accessible through graves.
It connects to Abyss (Hell), Elysion (Heaven), and Ashihara’s Yomi (Underworld).
They possess almost no spoken language.
Instead, they communicate through song, conveying intent through tone alone.
Few can read or write, especially women.
They systematically assassinated members of the Reiwu royal family.
Most enemy forces were slain by Corvus, leaving the Yukara as another rare surviving people.
Synopsis
King Gamigin suppresses the Wenkam people and orders the massacre of the Morax family.
The Mahina family is brought under the protection of Lonwei.
The returned crown prince, Foraii, sets fire to his own mansion and is believed to have died burned alive while playing the piano amid the flames.
A devastating plague causes the successive deaths of the Reiu royal family.
Gamigin is assassinated by the Yukara people, and after the plundering of Revena, Corwu becomes the leader of the Reiu.
King Gamigin falls from his horse and later dies after being subjected to brutal torture.
Corwu holds a dialogue with the elders of the Ougi tribe, during which he kills Momotose, who had come to assassinate him.
After subjugating the Wenkam, Ougi, and Yukara peoples, negotiations are held with the Zadow tribe, who resist until the very end.
The talks collapse, and the final war begins.
The Reiu Allied Forces face the Zadow Empire.
Although Zadow overwhelmingly surpasses them in weaponry and military strength, Corwu and Lonwei devise bold and unconventional strategies and refuse to yield.
Final Phase
Originally, the Zadow tribe were loyal retainers of the Reiu people.
For certain reasons, the true direct royal lineage of the Reiu withdrew from the public stage and chose to live quietly as a nomadic people.
The Zadow chieftain swore:
“One day, without fail, we shall return the throne to our true lord. My descendants shall await that moment with all their hearts.”
However, there was a continuation to this oath known only to the Zadow imperial family.
The Reiu king added:
“If my descendants prove unworthy, foolish, or corrupt, then let the lineage end.”
Unaware of this secret clause, Corwu and his allies panic in disbelief.
“This is bad. Really bad. No one told us this!”
After all, Gamigin had massacred the Wenkam, and Corwu had slaughtered the Yukara. Trust had already plummeted disastrously.
To make matters worse, the Wenkam had childhood friends among them, the Oiri family, which enraged Emperor Eugen beyond measure.
In the final decisive battle, Eugen makes a bitter choice and deploys the forbidden weapon of mass destruction known as Indra’s Thunder, reducing everything to scorched earth.
Although the immortal Ougi people shielded the Reiu, most lives were lost.
Nearly all of the Zadow imperial family perished as well, including Prince Rüdiger and Prince Gyorgy.
Former Emperor Igor and Crown Prince Zan survived under the protection of the Ougi royal family, but had already lost nearly all will to continue the war.
At the imperial capital El Dorado, a duel between Emperor Eugen and Prince Corwu determines the outcome, finally bringing the war to an end.
After a formal dialogue, as a vow for tribal unification, the following terms are agreed upon:
“The safety of the Zadow people shall be guaranteed, and one third of the lands owned by Zadow shall be formally designated as Zadow territory and imperial land.”
Under these conditions, Emperor Eugen and Empress Katinka commit suicide.
Former Emperor Igor and Prince Ruslan take charge of El Dorado, while Lonwei establishes Ulan as the capital and ascends the throne as Emperor of the terrestrial Reiu.
His empress is Lilli, and their only son, Amon, is named crown prince.
Corwu delivers a public address, changes his name to Corvus, and ascends the throne as the Raven King.
Declaring, “Only those who wish to follow me may come. If no one does, I’ll just drag people along by force,”
he selects his followers and founds a new nation in a desolate paradise of the heavens.
The position of queen remains vacant.
Karasia, despite her flawless bloodline, remains only a concubine.
Thus, under the dual system of Corvus ruling the heavens and Lonwei ruling the earth, tribal unification is finally achieved.
Afterward
Five clans of raven-like demonic beings once fought endlessly across mountains and highlands.
Prince Corwu of the Reiu united them and led his people to their celestial homeland, arriving at an ancient castle in the sky.
During the era of the Five Clans, they were known to other nations as
“The Kereit,”
“The Raven Tribe,”
or
“The Ravenfolk.”
